Jedidiah ran, his heart freed from the weight of fear. Leo was fine—in fact, he was a hero. Again. Jedidiah couldn’t have been more proud, and he would be sure to let Leo know that. And Isabelle—

His heart pounded, and not from the exertion. She didn’t hate him. He was so afraid he’d have to break down some barrier he had created with his temper, and the last words he had flung at her. Making love to her had left him raw, his heart completely exposed. It still scared the hell out of him.

Now—he wanted to take a chance with her, wanted to discover the sultry, courageous woman hiding under the prim schoolteacher. Leo adored her, and their lives had been empty without the warmth of a female presence.

He forced himself to push thoughts of her aside, and skidded to a halt when he caught the familiar scent. Tangy, beer-edged sweat, chewing tobacco, too-strong cologne. He followed the scent trail, slowing when he heard angry shouts.

“You didn’t finish it, you fucking idiot! You were supposed to stay until it was finished—”

“You were supposed to help me with it! Where the fuck were you when I was slaving—”

“Shut up, both of you.” That was the voice of their leader. Jedidiah recognized it from their last encounter. “We will just regroup, find a different spot to lay the damn.”

Over your dead body, asshole.

Jedidiah moved closer to the clearing, and let out a low growl.

All three men froze.

“What the fuck was that?” Tangy Sweat swung around, his wide, unshaven face pale. He searched the trees, but Jedidiah knew he wouldn’t be seen. Not until he was ready.

The leader moved to him. “A bear. I told you there were brown bears here. They’re harmless.”

Jedidiah let out a snort. He’d show them harmless.

He moved to a different spot, halfway around the clearing, and let out another growl. This time all three men jumped. He took advantage and showed himself, appearing at the edge of the clearing, still on all fours.

The men scrambled, putting the clearing between them and Jedidiah. He’d hoped just his appearance would chase them off. Since it didn’t, he moved to the next level and stood. All seven plus feet of big, thickly muscled bear.

“Holy shit!” Too-Strong Cologne screamed, tripping over part of a fallen log as he retreated.

Tangy Sweat cowered behind the leader, who carried the chewing tobacco scent. He pulled a knife out of a sheath at his waist, his hand shaking when he pointed it at Jedidiah.

“No food here, big boy. Now shoo!”

Jedidiah shook his head and growled.

All three men backed away, slowly this time. Jedidiah followed them, still not aggressive, but ready for Chewing Tobacco to make a move. A probably stupid move.

It came sooner and faster than he expected.

Chewing Tobacco darted forward, swinging the knife like he knew how to use it. Jedidiah dropped to all fours and charged him, letting out a loud roar. The man took a swipe at him before jumping out of the way.
